1. Create your concept
Before starting an online business, it’s essential to go through several important steps. Ask yourself how you’ll make your beauty and care webshop stand out. Define your target audience, research how often your ideal customers shop, and understand their needs and challenges. Consider whether you want to specialize in skincare, cosmetics, hair care, or a combination of these. Will you focus on cruelty-free and vegan products, or highlight Dutch brands? Simply adding products to your store isn’t enough anymore — careful planning is key, including choosing the right name for your webshop.
All of this forms the foundation of your concept:
-
Product selection
-
Defining your target audience
-
Coming up with a business name
-
Identifying what makes you unique
-
Defining your mission and vision
2. Register with the Chamber of Commerce
As the owner of an online store, you are considered an entrepreneur. Once you start selling, you must comply with laws and regulations, which often means registering with the Chamber of Commerce and the Tax Office. During the startup phase, you may choose to keep your online store offline until all formalities are completed.
When registering with the Chamber of Commerce, you’ll need to provide your company name, business plan, and other details. Once registered, you are officially the owner of your new business!
For more information, visit the Chamber of Commerce website.

3. Build your assortment
Now we come to the most important — and fun — part: your product range!
The beauty and care market is filled with countless online shops, so it’s essential to offer a unique assortment. Are you thinking of focusing on products for the face, hair, or body? Will you choose professional, high-end brands or more affordable options for a broader audience? Maybe you’re considering creating your own products or sourcing from a supplier?
4. Set your price
After purchasing your assortment, it’s essential to set your selling prices. For branded products, there is often a fixed retail price you need to follow. However, for unbranded items and, of course, your own collection, you have the freedom to set your own prices.
A common markup to aim for is 2.5. One way to calculate your prices is to list all your costs — this helps you determine the price your product needs to have in order to make a reasonable profit.

5. Build your webshop
Now it’s time to create your online storefront: your webshop! To do this, you need webshop software—a system that enables you to sell products online. Typically, webshop software includes key features like product management, order processing, and payment setup.
There are two main types of webshop software: Open Source and SaaS (Software as a Service). Acendy is a SaaS platform, meaning you can set up and manage your online store without any programming skills. Additional benefits include automatic updates and ongoing platform improvements, all handled for you!
With Acendy, you can quickly and easily build your own webshop—even without technical knowledge. Curious to see how it works? Start your free 14-day trial today!
6. Tips for professional product photos
If you want to start a beauty and care webshop, product photos are an essential part of your success. Especially without a physical store, your online shop is the only place where you can convince visitors to make a purchase.
Good product photos help make up for the fact that customers can’t physically try the products, and they can also reduce the number of returns. When selling branded products, you often receive professional photos from suppliers, which is a big advantage!
7. Write clear product texts
When creating product descriptions for your webshop, it’s important to write original content rather than simply copying your supplier’s information — especially with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) in mind.
On-page SEO involves optimizing your website itself, which includes writing high-quality, unique texts, using relevant keywords, and improving the overall user experience. Off-page SEO focuses on building your site’s authority through external links pointing to your website.
