Create shoppable moments everywhere

It is safe to say that social media has become part of our daily lives in recent years. Almost everyone is active on one or more social media platforms, such as Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube and many more. That is why it is a must to use social media for your webshop. It is the place to get in touch with (potential) customers, expand your reach and thus increase your sales. On this page, you will find everything you need to know if you want to use social media to boost your webshop.

Figures on social media in the Netherlands in 2024

First, let's look at some figures* about social media in the Netherlands in 2024:

  • Instagram has 8 million Dutch users.

*This data is based on Newcom's National Social Media Survey 2024 .

In short, daily usage continues to grow primarily on Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and LinkedIn. Social media has been part of the marketing mix for years. The marketing world distinguishes between different types of content: paid media, managed media and earned media. You can read about the difference below.

Social media marketing

01.

Earned media.

This is perhaps the most powerful form of media, it's when someone shares something positive about your company, posts a comment or other forms of online word of mouth. One way to exert some influence on this is through influencer marketing. With a strong social media strategy, it's important to use a mix of all three media mentioned here!

02.

Paid media (paid media).

This is all types of media that you pay for, such as ads on Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and so on.

03.

Owned media

These are the channels you manage yourself, such as your company page on Instagram, your LinkedIn account and your website.

Setting up a social media strategy for your shop

Many people start social media without a clear plan. While this can be a work method, we recommend thinking a bit more carefully about how to use social media. What channels are you going to use? When are you going to post content? And exactly what kind of content are you going to share? Through a social media strategy, you get a better grip on these questions. You work in a targeted and efficient manner, you can measure what works and you gain insight into areas for improvement.

The parts of a social media strategy for your webshop

Social Media Audience
Target Audience
  • First, decide who you want to reach on social media. This can be multiple audiences, but it's helpful to keep it limited in the beginning. You can always add additional target groups once you have more experience.

  • For each target group, write down the following aspects: age, gender, marital status, income, children, interests, hobbies, daily life and favorite social media channels. This way you will create a list of social media channels on which you can be active and get inspiration for your products' content.

Objective
  • Ask yourself why you want to use social media. Do you want to create more awareness for your brand? Increase traffic to your website? Build customer loyalty?

  • Think carefully about your goals and formulate measurable objectives that you can evaluate on a monthly basis. For example, the reach of your social media posts, the number of clicks to your webshop or the amount of interaction (likes, comments, shares) on your content.

  • This way you can determine whether you are on the right track or whether you may need to make adjustments.

Social media objective
Social Media Competitors
Competitors
  • Identify who your competitors are and check if they are active on social media. Take a look at their accounts and analyze what they are doing. It is important not to blindly copy their strategy, but rather look at your Unique Selling Points (USPs) and highlight them clearly on your channels.

  • Make yourself stand out! It is useful to keep an eye on your competitors on social media, as this can inspire you to do something that fits your brand.

Content
  • After you've answered these questions, it's time to get creative. Come up with different formats, series and types of content that resonate with your target audience. For example, think about reels, stories and feedposts.

  • It is also important to think about the days and times you want to post. A handy tool for this is a content calendar. This helps you create structure and overview in your content planning.

Social Media Content
Social Media Interaction
Interaction
  • While you may have some content figured out in advance, it's important to remain flexible. After all, social media is an interactive platform. Always stay in touch with your target audience by reading comments and responding.

  • Also read what is being said on other channels and keep an eye on new trends. This way, you can respond well to what is going on among your target audience and tailor your content accordingly.

Measuring is knowing
  • To determine whether your efforts are actually producing the desired results, it is important to measure regularly.

  • Start with a baseline measurement to chart your current results.

  • Then you can track how far you are in achieving your goals on a monthly basis, for example. This way, you can always make adjustments if necessary. Moreover, at the end of the year you will have concrete figures to look back on.

Social Media Measuring

Different Social Media Channels

Now that we've discussed how to set up successful social media marketing, we'd like to highlight some popular social media channels and give tips on how to use them to promote your shop.

TikTok - The Booming Video App

The numbers above don't lie. TikTok is booming and can't be left out of your communication mix if your target audience is between the ages of 15 and 30. It's a platform where you can get started relatively easily and quickly. The videos are short, expensive equipment is not necessary and with literally every TikTok you place you can reach new audience.

Pinterest - The inspiration platform

An often forgotten social media channel, but with 4.5 million Dutch users a very interesting platform. Pinterest is mainly used as a source of inspiration, such as outfits, vacation destinations and photography. Therefore, place your products in a context that can inspire others.

Instagram - Indispensable in your Marketing Mix

Instagram has become one of the most popular social media channels today and should not be missing from your marketing strategy. You can see Instagram as an extension of your webshop. Present your products in an attractive way, share actions via stories, stay in touch with your target group and increase your sales by using live videos. Instagram is the channel of 2023!

Facebook - Still interesting for your business

Unfortunately, Facebook is losing ground, but that does not mean that this platform cannot be interesting for your business. Do you want to target an audience between the ages of 45 and 65? Then Facebook is still the perfect place to reach (potential) customers.

Conclusion

Social media marketing can be a powerful tool to bring your shop to the attention of your target audience. Coming up with interesting content, staying in touch with your target group and regularly measuring your results are essential to be successful. Use the various social media channels in a smart way and create unique marketing strategies that fit your target audience. Follow these tips and you will find that your website beats the competition and achieves better rankings!
