1. Start with the concept
Start by developing the concept for your tools and building materials webshop, and go through a few essential steps before going live. It’s important to ask yourself how your webshop will stand out from others in the market. Define your target audience, understand their buying behavior, and identify their specific needs and challenges. Will you focus on professionals, or also serve the average DIY enthusiast? Are you prioritizing sustainability, or are you more focused on offering the latest innovations? Simply offering products isn’t enough — careful planning is key, including choosing the right name for your shop.
Also focus on the following parts of your concept:
-
Product selection
-
Defining your target audience
-
Coming up with a business name
-
Identifying your unique strengths
-
Creating your mission and vision
2. Register with the Chamber of Commerce (CoC).
As the owner of an online store, you’re considered an entrepreneur. Once you start selling, you must comply with applicable laws and regulations. This usually includes registering with the Chamber of Commerce and the Tax Office. During the start-up phase, you can choose to keep your webshop offline until all administrative matters are arranged.
When registering with the Chamber of Commerce, you’ll need to submit details such as your company name and business plan. Once that’s done, you’re officially the owner of your brand-new business!

3. Develop your assortment
Now we come to the most essential — and most exciting — part: your products!
With many existing tools and construction webshops out there, it’s crucial to offer a unique product range. Maybe you’ve developed your own product that you want to bring to market, or perhaps you have a clear vision and want to curate a collection from existing brands.
4. Set the price
After sourcing your assortment, it’s essential to determine your selling prices. For branded products, there’s often a fixed retail price you’re expected to follow. However, with unbranded items — and especially your own product line — you have the flexibility to set your own prices.
A common approach is to apply a margin of 2.5. One helpful method is to clearly list all associated costs. This allows you to calculate the minimum selling price needed to create a profitable revenue model.

5. Build your webshop
Now it’s time to create your online storefront: your webshop! To do this, you’ll need webshop software — a system that allows you to sell products online. This kind of software typically includes essential features like product listings, order management, and setting up payment options.
There are two main types of webshop software: Open Source and SaaS (Software as a Service). Acendy is a SaaS platform, which means you can build and manage an online store without any programming knowledge. Additional benefits include automatic updates and continuous improvements to the platform — all without any extra effort on your part.
With Acendy, you can create your webshop quickly and easily, even without technical skills. Curious how it works? Start your free 14-day trial today!
6. Tips for product photos
If you want to launch a tools and building materials webshop, product photos are essential. Especially without a physical store, your online shop is the only place where visitors can be convinced to make a purchase.
High-quality product photos help build trust by compensating for the inability to physically see or test the items. They also play a key role in reducing the number of returns. If you’re selling branded products, you’ll often receive professional images from suppliers — which is a great advantage!
7. Write clear product texts
When writing product descriptions for your webshop, it’s recommended to create original content rather than copying text from your supplier. This is important for SEO (Search Engine Optimization). On-page SEO focuses on optimizing your own website — this includes writing unique and relevant content, using the right keywords, and enhancing the overall user experience. Off-page SEO, on the other hand, is about building authority by getting external websites to link back to yours.
