1. Start at the beginning: the concept

Before launching your online business, it’s essential to take a few key steps. Consider how you will make your interior or garden webshop stand out from the competition. Define your target audience, understand how often they shop, and decide on the style of home décor you want to offer. Will your focus be broad, covering all home decor items, or more specific, such as only garden furniture? Is your style modern, bohemian, or retro? Simply adding products to your store is no longer enough — you need a well-thought-out plan, including choosing the right name for your webshop.

This overall plan is called your concept.

Could you use some guidance in shaping the following parts of your concept?

  • Selecting your product range

  • Defining your target audience

  • Creating a catchy company name

  • Identifying your unique selling points

  • Formulating your mission and vision

2. Register with the Chamber of Commerce

As the owner of an online store, you are officially an entrepreneur. From the moment you start selling, you must comply with relevant laws and regulations, which usually means registering with the Chamber of Commerce and the Tax Authority. During the startup phase, you can choose to keep your webshop closed until all formalities are completed. When registering at the Chamber of Commerce, you’ll need to provide your business name, business plan, and other details. Once registered, you are the proud owner of your new business!

3. Develop your collection

Now it’s time for the most exciting and important part: your product range! The home and garden market already has thousands of online stores, so offering a unique selection is key. Will you focus on vibrant, Mediterranean summer vibes or lean towards organic, natural, and neutral styles? Are you thinking of selling handmade items or sourcing your collection from suppliers?

4. Set the price

After assembling your collection, setting the right selling price is crucial. For branded products, there is often a fixed retail price you need to follow. However, with unbranded items and especially your own creations, you have the freedom to set your own prices. A common rule of thumb is to maintain a margin of 2.5. A practical method to determine your prices is to add up all your costs, giving you a clear idea of the minimum price your products need to be to generate a healthy profit.

5. Building your webshop

Now it’s time to create your digital storefront: your webshop! To do this, you'll need e-commerce software — a system that enables you to sell products online. This software typically includes all the key features, such as adding products, managing orders and setting up payment methods.

There are two main types of e-commerce software: Open Source and SaaS (Software as a Service). Acendy is a SaaS platform, which means you don’t need any technical or programming skills to get started. Even better: the platform is continuously improved and updated for you — no maintenance required!

6. Tips for good product photos

A crucial part of starting your own interior or garden webshop is having high-quality product photos. If you don’t have a physical store, your webshop is the only place where customers can see what they’re buying — so visuals really matter.

Strong product images help shoppers feel confident in their purchase, even without touching or testing the item. They also help lower the number of returns. If you’re selling branded items, you’ll often receive professional images from the supplier — which is convenient!

7. Write clear product descriptions

When writing product descriptions for your webshop, it’s best to create original content rather than copying text from your suppliers — especially with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) in mind.

On-page SEO is about optimizing your website itself. That means writing unique and valuable product texts, using relevant keywords, and ensuring a smooth user experience.

Off-page SEO, on the other hand, is all about building your website’s authority through external links pointing to your site.

Both are essential if you want your products to be found in search engines like Google.
